Transition Time

Filed under ++ General ++

Windwalker-Farm is becoming Windwalkerfarm.

Please be patient while the design of this site gets transferred too - the new site is fully functional even though not as personal yet as this one in its looks, and the new site will continue to grow while this site will in the near future redirect itself to there.

Three Years Later

Filed under ++ General ++ Farm ++

How quickly time passes. We were completely chagrined to realize how long it had been since anything had been posted to our webiste. And this mainly happened because we are creating a new, sister website strictly about food. In the late winter of ‘05 we decided to cease growing for our farmers’ market and simply sell our prepared foods and honey. this came about because I, (Joan), enrolled in Clayton College of Natural Health in order to earn a degree in Holistic Nutrition. I had realized the previous fall that I would like to become a Food Coach but didn’t have the necessary background knowledge.

Clayton College offered me the opportunity to take their courses on a distance learning basis at my own pace. I love it! I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the textbooks and assignments. The required projects fit my goals completely and allow me to already have several good starts on client handouts pertaining to specific health conditions and nutrition. I hope to have my degree by fall or winter at the latest and will offer food consulting at that time.

But what about Windwalker Farm? We continue to grow fruits and vegetables for our family and to use for the prepared food we sell at market. Our wonderful high tunnel shares its space with some of Jim’s sailboats and still has room for our favorite nuritious veggies through the winter. We have actually enjoyed the farm more because we aren’t frantically trying to make money from it. We rediscovered our patio last summer and literally lived on it, enjoying every meal out there. We manage to extend our seasons at both ends with a chimenea, savoring the smoky misquite smell long into the evenings.

We have more time to travel now and we can travel during the “growing season", a real no-no when we were heavy into growing. The posted picture was taken last October in Chimayo, New Mexico on a wonderful trip into Georgia O’Keeffe country.

Our farm activities continue to include attempting to figure out the logistics of creating a family compound on our 100 acres within the constrictions of our county requirements. We know that the issue of having reached “peak oil” will create the necessity for innovative living and we’d like to meet that head-on and be ready when it comes. We will be discussing this in further posts. In the meantime, if readers aren’t familiar with this issue we encourage everyone to view the documentary “The End of Suburbia". Its coming - guaranteed!

Early June high tunnel

Filed under ++ Farm ++

This is our first season to grow in our new high tunnel. In the center rows are tomatoes and a few zinnias, on right, and summer squash and sweet peppers, on the left. The two outer rows are planted with pole beans and cucumbers. All were planted in mid-April.
